Hettie Nichols, daughter of Edward & Margaret VanDruff was born in Waynesburg, Pa. Dec. 15, 1839. Death of her father in early childhood was followed by the removal of her mother and family to La Harpe. Here the mother died leaving a family of 10, of whom Mrs. Melissa Pitt, now ill at her home near Lenera is the sole survivor. After her mother's death she made her home with her brother, Joseph Nichols.
On Dec. 6, 1863 she married John P. James with whom in the spring of 1865 she came to Lawrence, Ks. The following year they went to Johnson county. She is survived by two sons, Andy J. and Willard. She died Oct. 19, 1918, Corinth Cemetery, Kansas.
