Mr. George McGowan of southwest Lawrence died last week Monday, Oct 17, 1898, at 2 P.M. The funeral services on Wednesday were held in the M. E. church at Lawrence, Rev. Trewin officiating. Mr. McGowan was one of the early settlers in this section. He was born in Smithtown, Geauga (sic - Columbiana) County, Ohio, Jan 28, 1825, and thus lived to the good ripe age of seventy-three years, eight months and twenty-nine days. On May 27, 1848, [Portage Marriage book has 17 May] he was married to Caroline Pickering, who passed away two years ago, March 28. In 1864 the family moved from Ohio to Michigan, enduring many hardships. In 1864 [sic - 1865] Mr. McGowan was drafted into the Union service, serving with the 15th Michigan. During his absence in the army, some miscreant took the liberty to drive away the only cow they had, together with two head of young cattle. The family consisted of father,mother and twelve children, all of whom are living save one, Andrew, the oldest [son], who died Jan 27, 1891. Mr. McGowan suffered much from heart trouble and other complications during the last seven years of his life. Seven sons and three daughters accompanied the remains to their last resting place in the Lawrence cemetery. The deceased also leaves to mourn, five brothers and three sisters; also twenty seven grandchildren and three great-grand-children. He joined the Disciple Church in early years.
