William's father, Robert Taylor, was born October 7, 1819, in the Village of Ballybofey, County Donegal in Ireland. He came to Philadelphia in 1844, where he started in the crockery business in the old district of Southwark. He was a prominent china merchant in Philadelphia for many years.
William married Annie Allen Merritt in Philadelphia on September 16, 1884. William was attending Princeton College, but left school after marrying Annie. This resulted in an extended estrangement between Annie and the Taylor Family who had wanted William to complete college.
