At the outbreak of the Civil War, Dr. Chauncey S. Burr enlisted in the 8th Indiana Infantry, serving one year. He then entered medical school at the University of Michigan, but graduated from another school on Long Island. He then became the surgeon of the 18th Illinois infantry. After the war he practiced medicine in Anderson, Indiana, then in Chicago, where he died as the result of an abdominal operation. He married Woodnut Conwell Stilwell Jan. 20, 1881, the daughter of Thomas Neil Stilwell and Winifred K. Conwell.
