Motion Picture Director. He is best-known for "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" (1916), the first feature-length version of the Jules Verne tale, which became famous for its groundbreaking underwater photography. Paton was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and made his American screen debut as an actor in 1914. He spent much of his career at Universal and directed 67 films, most of them B-budget serials and action stories. Illness forced him to retire in 1937 and he died at the Motion Picture Country Home. Unlike the majority of silent films, Paton's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" still survives and is available on DVD.
