Michael Murphy
Birth: Sep. 5, 1831
Death: Apr. 4, 1893

Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Tipperary, Ireland, he served as a Farrier in the 2nd Battalion, British Army. Near Azimghur, India, April 15, 1858, Farrier Murphy was part of the forces engaged in the pursuit of Koer Singh's Army from Azimghur. When the Adjutant Officer of the 3rd Sikh Cavalry, who was wounded and surrounded by the enemy, Farrier Murphy cut down several men. Although himself severely wounded, he never left the Adjutant Officer's side until support arrived. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross from Queen Victoria on January 4, 1860. He died in Darlington, County Durham, England, at age 56. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
