World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in St Martins, Perthshire Scotland, he served as a in Lieutenant the Sutherland Highlanders, British Army. On October 25, 1918, Lieutenant Bissett was command of a platoon in actions east of Maine, France. When the forward units started taking heavy casualties, he took command of the company and handled it with great skill after a determined German counter attack had turned his left flank. Realizing the danger, he withdrew to the railway thus temporarily saving the situation. The enemy however continued to advance in force after his men had exhausted their ammunition. Under heavy fire he mounted the railway embankment and calling to his men to charge with the bayonet, drove back the enemy with heavy loss. He later again charging forward established a line until following companies could advance. For most conspicuous bravery and leadership, he was awarded the Victoria Cross presented by King George V Buckingham Palace. He also served in World War II with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and achieved the rank of Major. He died at the age 77 in Wrexham, Wales.
