Capt. Beverly Wilson Witherspoon, died Saturday afternoon at the VA Medical Center, the 9th anniversary of the death of his wife, Elizabeth Suitt Witherspoon.

Capt. Witherspoon was born in Catawba, North Carolina. He was raised at the Children's Home in Winston-Salem where he was awarded the Male Alumni of the year in 2006. He was educated at RJ Reynolds High School, where he was Senior class president and captain of the football team, and attended Duke University, Class of 1955.

Captain Witherspoon joined the US Naval Aviation Cadet program in 1954, where he entered flight training in Pensacola, FL. He proudly served his country in the US Navy for 31 years until his retirement in 1985. In 1961, Captain Witherspoon flew a HSS-2 anti-submarine helicopter 192.9 miles over a 3 mile straight line course for a world record. He was the recipient of many medals, including the Legion of Merit, the National Defense Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Upon his retirement, he remained active with the Retired Officers Association.

Captain Witherspoon was a member of the Bahama Ruritan Club serving as its President, Vice President, Secretary, and for four years was on the Board of Directors. He was also a very active member of Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, serving as vice chair of the administrative council, member of the staff/parish relations committee, and a member of the stewardship committee until his death.

Captain Witherspoon is survived by his daughter, Cathi Dele Witherspoon (Issy Carney) of Antioch, TN; brothers, Dr. Loy H. Witherspoon of Charlotte, NC, Joseph Witherspoon of Conover, NC; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Captain Witherspoon was preceded in death by his daughter, Kerri Jane Witherspoon.

A funeral service will be held Friday, September 27, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church, Bahama. Officiating will be Rev. Grace G. Hackney. Captain Witherspoon will be buried next to his wife and daughter in Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be announced.
