During the silent era he specialized in directing women-oriented melodramas, such as "The Eyes of Julia Deep" (1918), "The Wise Virgin" (1924), and "Hearts and Fists" (1926), while appearing as an actor in movies directed by others. With the arrival of talkies he turned exclusively to acting. Graying and distinguished-looking, Ingraham was usually cast as an authority figure, often in B westerns. His credits in front of the camera include "Intolerance" (1916), "Scaramouche" (1923), "Our Daily Bread" (1934), "Modern Times" (1936), "Captains Courageous" (1937), "You Can't Cheat an Honest Man" (1939), "Love Affair" (1939), "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939), "The Roaring Twenties" (1939), "Destry Rides Again" (1939), "My Little Chickadee" (1940), and "This Land is Mine" (1943). Throughout his career Ingraham appeared in 277 films and directed 102. He retired in 1950 and died at the Motion Picture Country Home.
