Retired Army Colonel

Steven P. Ankley, 62, who served as an Army infantry officer for 30 years, died at his home in Springfield, VA, surrounded by loving family on September 20, 2013, after a long and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on November 6, 1950 and was the son of the late Colonel William J. Ankley and Betty Thompson Ankley of Springfield.

Steven received his bachelor's degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1973 after graduating from West Springfield High School. Steve was a soldier's soldier and he felt it was an honor and privilege to lead American soldiers. Notable achievements in his long career include service in Operation Paul Bunyan along the Korean Demilitarized Zone, and serving as the brigade executive officer for the 193rd Infantry Brigade in Operation Just Cause in Panama. The highlight of Steven's career was commanding the 4-22 Infantry Regiment in the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii before retiring from the Army in 2003.

Steven, a leader in war and peace, lived a long life of selfless service and dedication to his family, community and country. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, K. Ruth Ankley, sons Christopher W. Ankley and Scott S. Ankley, both of California, as well as many extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be at Demaine Funeral Home in Springfield, VA on Friday, September 27, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Demaine Funeral Home. Like his father before him, Colonel Ankley will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Duke Cancer Institute. See more at www.demainefunerals.com.
