John Augustus Wood
Birth: Jun. 10, 1818
Death: Jan. 23, 1878

Persian War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Fort William Scotland, he served as a Captain in the 20th Bombay Native Infantry, Indian Army. On December 9, 1856, Captain Wood was in command of a Grenadier Company during an assault on a fort at Bushire, Persia. He was the first man on the parapet of the fort where he was instantly attacked by a large number of the garrison. Although Captain Wood was struck by no less than seven musket balls, he threw himself upon the enemy and passed his sword through the body of their leader. His company then followed, overcame all opposition and secured the position. For most prestigious gallantry, he was invested with his Victoria Cross in Dacca, India, in January 1861. Remaining in the service, he left the Indian Army as a Brevet Colonel on February 12, 1870. He died at the age of in Poona, India. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
