Former Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Chicago and Bishop of the Titular See of Vamalla, Monsignor Timothy Joseph Lyne was born on March 21, 1919, in Chicago, to a couple of Irish immigrants, his uncle, Captain Timothy Lyne, headed a training facility that evolved into Chicago's Police Academy. He attended Resurrection and St. Mel elementary schools and Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago before graduating from the Mundelein Seminary.

Ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal Samuel Stritch on May 1, 1943, he served in parishes in suburban Riverside and Oak Park and was named pastor of Holy Name Cathedral in 1967. In December 1976, he was in that role when he was called to a nearby physician's office to administer last rites to Mayor Richard J. Daley.

At 64 years of age, Lyne was appointed Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Chicago by Pope John Paul II, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Vamalla on December 13, 1983, from Cardinal Joseph Bernardin, assisted by Bishops Alfred Leo Abramowicz and Nevin William Hayes O.Carm., he remained Holy Name's pastor until 1990.

Retiring from office on January 24, 1995, from 1988 up to his later years, Bishop Lyne served as Vicar for Senior Priests for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He died on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, aged 94, in the room where he had lived for 47 years, in a building named for him, the Bishop Lyne Rectory at Holy Name Cathedral on the Near North Side.

Funeral Mass, presided by Cardinal Francis George OMI., was said on Monday, September 30, at Holy Name Cathedral at 10.30 am., followed by interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.
