Michael Edison Sloane, 18, of Llewellyn Park, suddenly passed away on Sunday, September 11, 1949. He was a student of archaeology and art who had made several previous visits to Europe. In 1947, Michael and his family visited Fort Myers after traveling there several times for vacation and fishing trips. While his parents were in England, he was staying at Zell am See in the American zone. He hired a private motor coach to take him to Franz Josef-Haus and from there he apparently tried to climb further up the mountain while the coach was waiting for two hours. Michael stopped on a long icy ridge, took off his heavy sweater and laid down to rest. Allegedly, he slipped or was pushed by a small landslide into a deep crevice. He survived an 80 foot fall from a precipice into a crevice but later died from exposure, a broken foot, severe head injuries and a loss of blood. He was found on Friday, September 16, 1949 at the foot of the Pasterze Glacier with a camera, a roll of unexposed film, and his wallet containing $160 in traveler's checks and several Austrian coins. His shoes were found at the bottom of the crevice. Michael was taken to the mortuary at Heiligenblut. Beloved son of John Eyre and Madeleine (nee Edison) Sloane. Devoted grandson of Alice Mary (nee Eyre) and her late husband Thomas O'Conor Sloane, the late Mina (nee Miller) and famous inventor, Thomas Alva Edison. Dear brother of Thomas Edison Sloane and his wife Elaine Bernice (nee Levy) Sloane, John Edison Sloane and his wife Jule Marguerite (nee Day Sloane and Peter Edison Sloane and his wife Edith Hugh (nee Staiger) Sloane. Loving nephew of Charles Edison and his wife Carolyn (nee Hawkins) Edison, Theodore Miller Edison and his wife Ann Maria (nee Osterhout) Edison, Marion Estelle (nee Edison) Oeser, Thomas O'Conor Sloane Jr., Charles Edward O'Connor Sloane and his wife Adelaide Jenkins (nee Kernan) Sloane, Alice Mary (nee Sloane) and her husband Arthur Marvin Anderson. Adored cousin of Thomas Edison Sloane Jr., David Edward Edison Sloane, Madeleine Edison Sloane and John Heywood Sloane.
