Called the Dean of Lawyers, Dockweiler was a prominent civic leader,and Catholic layman. The Dockweiler Family was like a smaller, local version of the Kennedy's, many members being prominent in politics as judges and attorney's. He was the first student to graduate from St. Vincent's College (now Loyola) in 1887. He campaigned for Lieutenant Governor in 1902 and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1908 and in 1936. He was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1916 to 1932. He was made a Knight of St. Gregory by Pope Pius XI, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a layperson in the Catholic Church, of which only 65 Americans have ever received. The beach in Playa del Rey was renamed Dockweiler State Beach in his honor in 1955.
