Receiving a doctorate in canon law from Catholic University of America, Washington, in 1944, he successively taught at the Franciscan Theological Seminary in Santa Barbara, California. In 1966, he was elected president of the Canon Law Society of America. In the meantime, he became pastor of St. Mary's Church, Stockton, California, and for 12 years worked closely with the Latino community, serving as vice president and regional coordinator of the National Council for the Spanish Speaking, presently known as La Raza.
Particularly drawn to justice and peace issues, he promoted human rights in Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador, and concelebrated Mass with Monsignor Oscar A. Romero the day before the Archbishop was murdered.
Elected three times to the governing board of the Franciscan Province of St. Barbara, was Provincial Minister from 1967 until 1973 and president of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men from 1976 till 1982.
According to Franciscan Brother Timothy Arthur, the Province's archivist, "Father Alan kept a tight schedule. One day he would be in El Salvador, the next giving a retreat to some Sisters in Illinois, and the next week off to Rome, then to Haiti, and back to Rome, then back to St. Joseph's in Los Angeles where he would take the Mass at the county jail.
Father Alan passed away at 6.30 Thursday morning, October 15, 2009, at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, aged 96. Vigil service was held on Monday, October 19, at 7.00 pm., at the Friars' Chapel Old Mission Santa Barbara with funeral liturgy held the next morning at at Mission Church at 11 hrs. Interment followed at the Mission Cemetery.
