Manitowoc GI Killed in Vietnam

MANITOWOC—
Pfc. Gerald R. Schiesl, 20, of 2214 S. 23rd St., reported earlier this week as missing in action, died during an engagement against a hostile force in Vietnam March 24, according to official confirmation from military sources Saturday morning. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Schiesl.

Pfc. Schiesl had been on patrol duty with U.S. infantry forces, according to letters sent by him and received by relatives Friday.

He entered military service June 14, 1968, shortly after being graduated from Lincoln High school. He had also attended St. Andrew parochial school. After basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky., he had advanced infantry training at Fort Pol, La., and had been in Vietnam since Nov. 14.

Besides his parents, he is survived by four sisters, two brothers, his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Lallensack, of Manitowoc, three nieces and three nephews.

Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, will be in charge of funeral arrangements.

Military funeral arrangements are being made for Pfc. Gerald R. Schiesl, 20, of 2212 S. 23rd St., Manitowoc, who was killed in action March 24, in Vietnam.

Schiesl was born Jan. 2, 1949, in Manitowoc, son of Herbert J. and Delphine M. Lallensack Schiesl. He attended St. Andrew parochial school and Lincoln High School, graduating in June, 1968, and entered service shortly after his graduation. He had been employed at Imperial Eastman Corp.

Funeral services for Pfc. Gerald R. Schiesl of 2214 S. 23rd St., Manitowoc, who was killed in Vietnam March 24, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. D. L. Krembs will officiate. Military graveside rites will be conducted by a military contingent from Fort Sheridan, Ill., at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Dale (Carol) Holly, of Manitowoc.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Monday where at 7 p.m. the Rosary will be recited.

AWARDED MEDALS--Mr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Schiesl of 2214 S. 23rd St., Manitowoc, were recently presented with medals awarded posthumously to their son, Pfc. Gerald R. Schiesl, who was killed March 24 while engaged in a battle against hostile forces in Vietnam. Making the presentation before a military contingent at the Army National Guard Armory at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds was Lt. Col. Richard Sherwood of Oshkosh. Private Schiesl had been on patrol duty with U.S. Infantry forces at the time of his death. Included in the list of medals awarded to the soldier were the bronze star, purple heart, good conduct medal and the combat infantryman's badge. He previously received the national defense service medal, the Vietnam service medal, the Vietnam campaign ribbon, the sharpshooter badge with machine gun and rifle bars and the marksmanship badge with automatic rifle bar.
