Emil Schultz, Policeman for 30 years, Dies

MANITOWOC—
Lt. Emil A. Schultz, 60, a 30-year veteran on the Manitowoc Police Dept., died Saturday at his home, 1624 S. 24th St., after suffering an apparent coronary attack.

Schultz joined the department Jan. 17, 1938, filling a vacancy created when Cornelius Healy, now deceased, retired. He was promoted to sergeant Sept. 16, 1954, and was put in charge of patrolmen. He was subsequently promoted to detective Jan. 1, 1958, and to Lieutenant May 1, 1959.

Schultz had been a motorcycle officer for 16 years, a foot patrolman for four years before advancement to the position of being in charge of patrolmen on the 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. shift.

Helped Children
While a beat man, he helped many a child attending McKinley School, and the children took an occasion in 1953 to write letters of appreciation for his assistance, and a quartet visited the station to deliver the letters personally. He had helped guide them across the busy N. 11th and Huron streets intersection.

Prior to joining the police force, Lt. Schultz had worked at Mirro Aluminum Co., Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., and had been a relief operating engineer for the Wisconsin Public Service Corp. He trained for his police work by studying with the American Fingerprint System, the American Detective Training School and the George Wagner Detective Agency, all of New York.

Lt. Schultz was born March 10, 1909, the son of the late Anton and Mary Kaminski Schultz. He married Florence Bieberitz April 6, 1931. He was a member of the Wisconsin Policemen’s Assn., the Manitowoc Policemen’s Protective Assn. and the Holy Name Society.

Funeral Monday
Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Mary) Welles of rRochester, N.Y., and Mrs. John (Joan) Seidl of Manitowoc; five sisters, Mrs. John Buran, Mrs. George Engert and Mrs. Christine Lutzke of Manitowoc, Mrs. Harold Vetter of Grimms and Mrs. Oscar Irion of Chicago, and five grandchildren. A sister and three brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church. The Rev. D. L. Krembs will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Sunday where at 8:15 p.m. the Rosary will be recited.
