Crash Kills Two Manitowoc Youths; Two Rivers Boy Burns to Death
Car Hits Culvert, Tumbles 269 Feet
John M. Skubal, John R. Strouf Are Victims, Both Suffer Skull Fractures

MANITOWOC —
Two 19 year old Manitowoc youths en route home after playing ball at Two Rivers earlier Saturday evening died after the car in which they were traveling left Memorial Drive near Jasmine Street at 8:15 o'clock, struck a culvert and cartwheeled 269 feet from the point of impact.

John M. Skubal of 1615 S. 16th St., driver of the car, died at 6:25 a.m. Sunday at Memorial Hospital, and his passenger, John R. Strouf, of 1413 S. 20th St., died at 2:10 a.m. at the same hospital.

Causes of death in both cases, according to Dr. Theodore Teitgen, Manitowoc county coroner, was cerebral hemorrhage resulting from skull fractures. In addition Strouf's jaw and nose were broken and he had a fractured left shoulder.

Witnesses said the Skubal car heading toward Manitowoc at a high rate of speed passed another vehicle and then veered onto the shoulder of the road, making no attempt to brake or to straighten out. Police measurements show the car traveled 145 feet along the edge of the road before hitting the culvert of the driveway leading to the Walter Reuther home at 1020 Memorial Dr., then vaulted end over end for 269 feet before coming to rest right side up on its wheels.

Thrown 70 Feet
Police found Strouf 10-1/2 feet from the car and Skubal was thrown more than 70 feet. Both were unconscious and bleeding profusely as police rushed them to Memorial Hospital in separate squad car emergency ambulances.

Police, warned about excessive speeding on this road by numerous telephone calls the past week, had a stakeout car watching the road for up to 15 minutes preceding the accident. The car had been called away to check on a car supposed to contain three men who jumped a restaurant bill at Two Rivers and were supposed to heading for Manitowoc. The accident happened a short time after the squad car left to investigate the complaint.

The Skubal car was not equipped with seat belts. There will be no inquest according to Coroner Teitgen.

Another life was claimed at almost the same spot o Memorial Drive exactly two years ago to the day when Richard Shell, 23, of Fond du Lac, driving a tanker truck loaded with gasoline, left the road at about 9 a.m. when the truck blew a front tire. His truck ran off the left side of the road, striking a tree before rolling over.

Shell was pinned in the badly smashed cab and had to be pried free by police and rescue workers. He suffered a skull fracture, crushed chest and two fractured legs. He died 2 ½ hours later at Memorial.
