Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Stirling, Scotland, he served as a Sergeant in the 93rd regiment of Foot, British Army At Lucknow, India, November 16, 1857, Sergeant Paton proceeded alone round the Shah Nujjiff fort under an extremely heavy enemy fire. Discovering a breach in the wall on the opposite side, he conducted the Regiment through by which the important position was taken. For distinguished personal gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on December 24, 1858. After being discharged from the Army he relocated to New South Wales, Australia, where he joined the prison service in 1861. He was chief warder at Port Macquarie (1865-75), chief gaoler at Deniliquin (1875-88), was appointed prison governor of Berrima gaol in 1890 and retired from the prison service in February 1896. He died at age 80 in Sydney, Australia.
