Former longtime Alaska resident and businessman George Ernest Shrum, 69, died Oct. 1, 1999, in Vancouver, Wash., after a long illness. A funeral was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Vancouver. Burial followed at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore.

Mr. Shrum was born Jan. 2, 1930, in Bakersfield, Calif. He was raised in Roseburg, Ore., and graduated from high school there. Mr. Shrum arrived in Alaska in 1958 and spent the next 40 years here. He was primarily self-employed, owning Russian Bell Jewelers, Tracy's Florist and Gifts and International Liquor Store in Anchorage. Mr. Shrum held a private pilot's license and enjoyed flying small airplanes, building remote-controlled airplanes and cooking. Most of all, he enjoyed the company of his family and friends. His family wrote: ''George loved to talk and would take the time to get to know someone. He was very generous with his time and found caring for others a pleasure in life.''

Mr. Shrum is survived by his wife of 32 years, Nancy; his son, Tracy of Auburn, Wash.; daughters, Tina Rae Osmond and family of Chugiak, and Teri Lee Pauley and her fiance, Fred Stills Jr., and family of Vancouver; his first wife, Evelyn, and their children, Rick Johnson Black and Lynda Marie Pope and family, all of Roseburg, and Cynthia James and family of British Columbia; grandchildren, Brandy, Ryan, Tiffany, John, Mathew, Nathan, Amanda, Trevor, Kevin, Logan and Heather; and great-grandchildren, Collin, Kennedy, Lazareth and Vanessa. Donations are suggested in Mr. Shrum's name to Trauma Intervention Program, Vancouver Fire Dept., 7110 N.E. 63rd St., Vancouver, WA 98661.
