Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he served as a Private in the 71st Regiment, Highland Light Infantry, British Army. In actions at Marar, Gwalior, India, on June 16, 1858, a party of Rebels being well armed and strongly posted in the line of advance on a detachment of the 71st Regiment. Private Rodgers on his own, attacked seven Rebels, killed one and drove off the rest. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on November 11, 1859. After the war, he returned to Scotland and while on a visit to his sister in Glasgow, drank a bottle of sulphuric acid thinking it was alcohol, causing his death at age 41.
