Author. A prolific novelist, he is remembered for his technically detailed espionage and military science story lines that are set during and in the aftermath of the Cold War, as well as the video games which bear his name for licensing and promotional purposes. Born Thomas Leo Clancy, the second of three children, his father was a US postal employee and his mother worked in the credit department of a local store. He attended high school at Loyola Blakefield, a private Catholic school in Towson, Maryland, and graduated in 1965. He attended Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland) in Baltimore and graduated in 1969 with an English literature degree. He then worked for an insurance company in Hartford, Connecticut and in 1973, he joined the O. F. Bowen Agency, a small insurance agency based in Owings, Maryland. In 1980 he purchased the insurance agency and began writing novels in his spare time. In 1982 he began writing his first novel, "The Hunt for Red October" and three years later he sold it to the Naval Institute Press. After editing, it sold over 45,000 copies and received praise from then President Ronald Reagan, boosting sales to 300,000 hardcover and 2 million paperback copies and it became a national best-seller. He followed this up with "Patriot Games" (1987), "Clear and Present Danger" (1989), and "The Sum of All Fears" (1991), that became commercially successful films, starring actors Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck as his most famous fictional character 'Jack Ryan', while his second most famous character 'John Clark' has been played by actors Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber. His other literary works include "Red Storm Rising" (1986), "The Cardinal of the Kremlin" (1988), "Without Remorse" (1993), "Debt of Honor" (1994), "Executive Orders" (1996), "Rainbow Six" (1998), "The Bear and the Dragon" (2000), "Red Rabbit" (2002), "The Teeth of the Tiger" (2003), "Dead or Alive" (2010, with Grant Blackwood), "Against All Enemies" (2011, with Peter Terlep), "Locked On" (2011, with Mark Greaney), and "Threat Vector" (2012, with Mark Greaney). With the release of "The Teeth of the Tiger, he introduced the son and nephews of his character 'Jack Ryan' as the main characters of the novel and they continued in his novels "Dead or Alive," "Locked On,' and "Threat Vector." In 1992 he received an honorary doctorate in humane letters and delivered the commencement address at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and has since worked a reference to the school into many of his main works. In 1993 he joined a group of investors that purchased the Baltimore Orioles Major League Baseball team and was Vice Chairman of their Community Activities and Public Affairs committees. In 2008 the French video game manufacturer Ubisoft purchased the use of his name in association with video games and related products. He was one of only three authors to have sold two million copies on a first printing in the 1990s (the other two being John Grisham and J. K. Rowling). His 1989 novel "Clear and Present Danger" sold over 1.6 million hardcover copies, making it the Number 1 bestselling novel of the 1980s. He died after a brief illness at the age of 66. At the time of his death, 17 of his novels were best-sellers, with over 100 million copies in print. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
