Actor. Born Emmett Evan Heflin Jr., he was a dependable character actor in films, television and theatre, for over four decades. He began his career as a Broadway performer in the 1920s, before being signed to RKO Pictures and making his screen debut in "A Woman Rebels" (1936). He soon was cast in supporting roles in films such as "Santa Fe Trail" (1940) and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Jeff Hartnett in "Johnny Eager" (1942). Some of his most memorable films include "Shane" (1953), "Battle Cry" (1955), "3:10 to Yuma" (1957), "They Came to Cordura" (1959), "The Greatest Story Ever Told" (1965) and "Airport" (1970). For television, he appeared on "Playhouse 90", "The Dick Powell Theatre", "The Danny Thomas Hour" and in the TV movie "The Last Child". He died at age 62 and has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
