Son of Henry Bernard and Sarah Elizabeth Gilliam Stein, Mike was first married to Meekie Eblen. Mike and Meekie had two children: Gertrude Beulah and Francis Bernard. In 1918 Meekie died of influenza with contributory pneumonia. After her death, Meekie's mother and sister moved in with Mike to help care for the children. Mike and Meekie's sister, Cordelia, eventually married. Mike is buried between the two sisters.

Mike is remembered as having come into Winona with a wheelbarrow, offering shoe repair. That is how he began his dry goods/merchantile business. He and Cordie were always very well thought-of in the community, and they were always quick to lend a hand to anyone in need. Mike made Francis, his grandson, his first catcher's mitt out of shoe leather.
