Richard, the son of Sidney Blinder and Bernice Blinder of Los Angeles CA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 1, 1964 in Los Angeles CA. In Vietnam he was serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During Phase II of Operation Prairie in the mountainous terrain where the Gio Linh and Cam Lo Districts intersect of Quang Tri Province the Marines of Company L uncovered an NVA Base camp and ran into heavy combat with the enemy on March 2, 1967. A fierce battle ensued as the Marines went on the attack while the enemy rained barrages of 81 mm and 82 mm mortar fire on the advancing men. There were numerous casualties when the fighting finally subsided, one of them was Cpl Blinder who was killed as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds.
