Alan, the son of Charles J. Moore and Eva S. Moore of Beaver WV entered service (Selective Service) in the US Marine Corps on February 17 1966 in Beckley WV. Assigned to duty in Vietnam he served with Company C, 1st Shore Party Battalion, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On January 11 six Marines from Company C, as well as the helicopter crew of four men travelling on board a UH-34D from HMM-363 to Quang Ngai to participate in Operation Sierra in support of the 7th Marines, were killed in a Helicopter crash. The crash occurred approximately one-half mile south of Ky Ha into the South China Sea caused by apparent engine failure, there were no survivors. LCpl Moore was one of the casualties.
