He advised the British government as chief scientific adviser to the Ministry of Defense from 1971 to 1977. He was later appointed chief scientist for the Department of Energy until 1980. He was the author of his autobiography "Science, Churchill and Me" in 1990 and the book, "Cosmology" in 1952 about his theories of the universe.
