Civil War Union Army Officer. At age 23 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company I, 124th New York Volunteer Infantry on December 30, 1862. On the 2nd day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2, 1863) he fell in action as his regiment defended the "Triangle Field" near Houck's Ridge by the now famous Devil's Den.
