"Re: Joseph Applegate, a newspaper item in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle after his death states, "He was at the time of his death the only person in Brooklyn who had been a prisoner of the British troop in the War of 1812. He was captured with his mother when he was about a year old, but they were not kept long in captivity."
