George Strong
Birth: Apr. 7, 1833
Death: Aug. 25, 1888

Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award from British Queen Victoria during the first investiture of the Victoria Cross ceremony at Hyde Park, London England on June 26, 1857, for his actions as a private in the Coldstream Guards of the British Army in September 1855 at Sevastopol, Crimea. He was born in Odcombe, Somerset, England and died in Sherston, Wiltshire, England at the age of 55. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "In September 1855, at Sevastopol, in the Crimea, when on duty, Private Strong picked up a live shell which had fallen into the trench, and threw it over the parapet. He was well aware of the extreme danger involved, and his action saved many lives." In addition to the Victoria Cross, he also received the Crimean War Medal (with Sebastopol clasp) and the Turkish Crimea Medal. His Victoria Cross and other medals are on display at The Guards Regimental Headquarters (Coldstream Guards RHQ) in Wellington Barracks, London England. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
