Elias never married. He enlisted as a private in Co I, 19 (Dawson's) Arkansas Infantry on 26 Feb 1862. He was wounded and captured on 11 Jan 1863 during the Union attack on Fort Hindman at Arkansas Post. He was sent to Camp Douglas outside of Chicago, IL where he died of smallpox on 22 May 1863. He was buried in Chicago at Oak Woods Cemetery in a Confederate mound. While he was a prisoner he carved a pipe out of applewood and managed to send it to his sister Sarah Louisa Farrar. The family still has the pipe, with a note that Elias put inside of it.

Elias is mentioned in the will of his grandfather Henry Farrar, in the 1850 Census for Dallas County, AR and the 1860 Census for Hempstead County, AR as Elias Farra Merrill
