US Army Brigadier General. He graduated from West Point in 1887 and received his commission in the 4th Infantry. He served primarily in the western United States at the start of his career, and performed duty in Cuba with the 22nd Infantry during the Spanish-American War. He received the Silver Star for heroism while assigned to the Manila district during the Philippine-American War. He served several more times in the Philippines, including aide-de-camp to the Governor General and Assistant Chief of the Philippine Constabulary. From 1915 to 1917 he commanded the Philippine Constabulary. During World War I he was promoted to temporary Brigadier General and commanded: the 155th Depot Brigade; 80th Brigade, 40th Division; and 178th Brigade, 89th Division. After the war, he commanded 177th Brigade, 89th Division as part of the army of occupation in Germany. He later reverted to the permanent rank of Colonel, and he commanded first the 35th and later the 19th Infantry Regiment. He retired in 1922, and lived in Santa Barbara, California. In 1930 Congress passed a law allowing temporary generals from World War I to retire at their highest grade, so his rank of Brigadier General was posthumously restored.
