Actor. A hunky leading man of early silent films, then a character performer, often playing heavies. McDonald is memorable in the title role of Buster Keaton's "Battling Butler" (1926), and in several films directed by Cecil B. DeMille. His credits include "Carmen" (1913), "Intolerance" (1916), "Monte Cristo" (1922), "Trilby" (1923), "The Temptress" (1926), "A Girl in Every Port" (1928), "The Dragnet" (1928), "The Iron Mask" (1929), "Morocco" (1930), "Viva Villa!" (1934), "Anna Karenina" (1935), "The Plainsman" (1936), "The Buccaneer" (1938), "Union Pacific" (1939), "Beau Geste" (1939), "The Sea Hawk" (1940), "Northwest Mounted Police" (1940), "Blood and Sand" (1941), "Notorious" (1946), "Duel in the Sun" (1946), "Brute Force" (1947), "The Three Musketeers" (1948), "Samson and Delilah" (1949), "Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955), "The Ten Commandments" (1956), and "The Great Race" (1965). McDonald was born in Bowling Green, Kentucky. During his long, busy career he appeared in some 300 films and 90 TV shows.
