U.S. Congressman. At the end of the Civil War in 1865, he was appointed assistant assessor of Internal Revenue in South Carolina and was a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1867. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1868 and practiced law in Charleston, South Carolina. He was Sheriff of Charleston County, (1868 to 1872), an alderman of the City of Charleston, (1868, 1873, 1875), editor and proprietor of the Charleston Republican, (1871 to 1872) and a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, in 1873. In 1875, he presented credentials as an Independent Republican Member-elect to the Forty-fourth Congress, serving until 1876. He was again a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, in 1877 and assistant U.S. Attorney for South Carolina, (1878 to 1881). He was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, in 1882 and served until his death.
