Sandra Schmirler
Birth: Jun. 11, 1963
Death: Mar. 2, 2000

Professional Curler. A native of Biggar, Saskatchewan, she was an Olympic and Triple World Champion Canadian Curler. She began playing curling in high school but her big break didn't come until 1991. That year as the team's captain they won the Provincial Championship. In 1993 her team also won the Canadian Championships, and the World Championships. In 1994 and 1997 her team again won curling championships. In 1998 she also participated with her team at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, where they beat there opponent team 7-5, and won a gold medal for Canada. A year later in 1999 she was diagnosed with cancer. A daughter, mother, and wife, she passed away from the cancer on March 3, 2000, in a Regina, Saskatchewan, hospital, and was given a hero's funeral. She was posthumously honoured with the Saskatchewan Order of Merit that same year. The Sandra Schmirler Foundation was also established in her memory. (bio by: K)
