Major League Baseball Umpire. For 20 years, (1993 until his death), he served as an umpire in Major League Baseball (initially the National League from 1993 to 1999). His career of calling balls and strikes began at the age of seventeen, when he worked Little League games. After moving onto the Major League level in 1993, he officiated games during the 2006 World Series and three All-Star contests (1997, 2000 and 2013). In 1999, he endured open heart surgery and survived the mass resignation and removal of Major League umpires that same year. He had just completed work in the 2013 National League Divisional Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, when he was stricken by a fatal heart attack the following week.
