Allen, Carl Edward, 103, died Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Kings Daughters Hospital. He was born in Phil, KY, on April 16, 1910 the son of Joseph and Nannie Hoskins Allen. He graduated from Liberty High School in 1929, earned a BS degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1935 and while there taught in one and two room school houses. He sang with the Casey Four men's Quartet. He was Principal and a teacher at Whitley City Elementary School for 23 years. He was Minister of Whitley City Christian Church for 20 years, a member of the Advisory Committee on Public Higher Education, president of the 4-H Council in McCreary County, and Eagle Scout and a Scout Master. In 1960 he canvassed Whitley City to promote installation of a city water system. He was named to Who's Who in American Education. In 1957 he earned a master's degree from the University of Kentucky in elementary education. After moving to Milton, KY, he was principal of Milton Elementary School for five years. He also taught school in various Indiana schools. He was named President of Kentucky Department of Elementary School Principals and also president of Trimble County Retired Teachers. He retired from teaching at the age of 63. He was Minister of Whites Run Christian Church, Secretary of Happy Hills Christian Service Camp Board, president of Carroll County Ministerial Association, and secretary of Whitewater Ministerial Fellowship. He retired from preaching at the age of 80. He was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross, president of Tri-county Community Action Board, named Kentucky Citizen of the year in 2001. He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel and was named Kentucky Volunteer of the year 2007. He taught Sunday School classes until the age of 101. He is survived by his wife, Ila Allen; three daughters, Joeline Loague of Bethany, OK, Eulene Chitwood of Sebring, FL, and Marcy Brooks Johnson of Liberty, KY; one son, Ermal Allen of Creston, OH; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Forrest Allen; one sister, Kathleen Zachary; and his parents. Funeral was held Monday, October 14, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the North Madison Christian Church, 1400 E. Street Road 62, Madison, IN. Burial will be Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Antiock Christian Church Cemetery in Liberty.
