Jacob was the son of John and Susannah (Greenawalt) Dinsmore.

He then enlisted/ joined US Army 4th LA Batty M (4th Light Artillery, Battery M, Regular Army) on 28 Dec 1862 as a Sergeant and mustered out 28 Dec 1871 after over 10 years of total service.
