Former Auxiliary for the Diocese of Rockville Centre and Bishop of the Titular See of Castra Nova, Monsignor James Joseph Daly D.D., was born in The Bronx, New York, on August 14, 1921, and was ordained to the priesthood at 26 years of age on May 22, 1948, at the Pro-Cathedral of St. James in Brooklyn, upon finishing his studies at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York.

Serving at Our Lady of the Snow, Blue Point; Holy Child, Richmond Hill; and St. William the Abbot, Seaford, Daly was assigned to the faculty of the Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, and eventually named director of the Office of Priests Personnel in 1968. Assigned to St. Boniface, Elmont, as pastor in 1972, at 55 years of age, Pope Paul VI appointed him Auxiliary for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Castra Nova from Bishop John Raymond McGann, assisted by Bishops Walter Philip Kellenberg and Vincent John Baldwin on May 9, 1977.

Retiring from office on July 1, 1996, Bishop Daly passed away on Monday, October 14, 2013, aged 92. Reposing was held Thursday, October 17, from 2 pm. to 5 pm., at Our Lady of the Snow Church, 175 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, where the Mass of Transferral was also held at 7.30 pm.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday at 1 pm., at the Cathedral of St. Agnes, 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre. Interment followed at St. Boniface Cemetery, Elmont, New York.
