Civil War Union Army Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War in the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, rising to Colonel and commander of the regiment. During his service, he was wounded and taken prisoner by Confederate forces at Big River Bridge, Missouri, on October 15, 1861. He later directed the regiment's part in the capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was brevetted Brigadier General, U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the Battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hills, the Siege of Vicksburg, and Spanish Fort." After the war, he wrote his unit's regimental history, titled "History of the Thirty-Third Regiment Illinois Veteran Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War: 22nd August, 1861, to 7th December, 1865."
