Harriet was the only daughter born to Harriet Greene and Louden Arnold Bates in Hiram, Ohio. Harriet had 6 brothers: Sheldon, Caper, Ulysses, Harlow, Walter, and Elliot. When she was a young girl, she moved with her family to Polk, Wapello, Iowa.

At age, 20, Harriet married Martin S Ryel, who had fought in Ohio's 120 Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Harriet and Martin lived in Monroe County, Iowa and had 2 children:

Eunice 1868-1901 + Arthur Dodge
Henry 1870-1907 (118904841)

Sadly, Martin died in 1871, leaving Harriet with 2 small children.

In 1874 Harriet married Daniel McFadden, a coal miner. They had 3 children:

Ora Ann 1877-1950 (110154250) + Clinton Billings
Emergene Ann 1879- + Emmett Gibson
Carl 1888-1888

Harriet was only 46 years old when she died.
