William H. Bennett (WI State Journal, Madison, Feb 16): W.H. Bennett, aged 80, died at his home, 307 East Johnson St. last night. Mr Bennett was chief clerk in the public land office here , a position which he has held for several years.
Surviving are Mr. Sennett's widow and three sons, A.G. Bennett, 326 West Washington Ave., W.B. Bennett, 321 South Hamilton St., and A.V. Bennett of Jamestown, N.D. The eldest son, E.P. Bennett, died in Washington some years ago.
Mr. Bennett was born at Platteville, December 27, 1839. He was raised and obtained his schooling at Mineral Point, entering political life in 1860 when he became a messenger of the state assembly. At the outbreak of the Civil war in April, 1861, he enrolled as a volunteer in Co. E, 11th Wisconsin infantry. He took part in the engagements in Missouri and Arkansas and farther south near New Orleans.
He was married January 17, 1867, to Louisa Andrews of Mineral Point.
From 18878 to 1876 Mr Bennett served as deputy internal revenue collector, recovering five counties. From 1877 to 1881 he held a clerkship in the state land office, and January 1, 1882, served as superintendent of public property, under Gov Rusk, a place which he held until January 1, 189. During 1897-1898 he served as assistant adjutant general. In January 1903, he again entered the services of the state land office.
Throughout his life, Mr. Bennett has owned and edited newspapers. He was a member of Knights Templar, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and G.A.R.
FUNERAL AT MINERAL POINT - The funeral was at 10 o'clock a.m. on Wednesday. The body was rested in Masonic Temple, Mineral Point, where services were held, conducted by Revs, John Birell and A.H. Schoenfeld, after which Masonic services were conducted at the grave.

Mineral Point Tribune,Thur., 27 May 1897 pg 3: Capt. W.H. Bennett, the new assistant adjutant-general of the Grand Army, was born in Platteville, Dec. 27, 1839. His parents shortly afterward moved to Mineral Point. After finishing his studies in the public schools at that place he learned the printer's trade. In September, 1861, he enlisted in Co. E, eleventh regiment, Wisconsin volunteer infantry and served until October 1864, when he was honorably discharged. He participated in the sage of Vicksburg .and in the Red River and other campaigns. In 1869, he became proprietor of the Mineral Point Tribune, and has been connected with the paper ever since. For seven years he was superintendent of public property under Gov. Rusk and a most popular member of the capitol.
He has always been a worker in Grand Army circles. The pay is $1,800 a year and the press gang rejoice in the good fortune that has befallen one of its fellows.
