Elmer Fiddler dies; former ESD official

Elmer W. Fiddler of Conway, 79, former manager of the Conway office of the Arkansas Employment Security Division died today (May 23, 1984). He retired from the division in 1970, after 25 years of service.

He was born in Vilonia on Jan. 2, 1905, the son of Lilburn L. Fiddler and Susan Russell Fiddler. He was a member of Robinson and Center Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Rubye Wyatt Fiddler; a son, James W. Fiddler of Conway; and two sisters, Mrs. Flora McEuen and Mrs. Bertie Johnson, both of Conway.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Robinson and Center Church of Christ with Don Strickland and Harold Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Crestlawn Memorial Park with masonic honors.

Mr. Fiddler was a 53-year member of the masons, and a member of the Green Grove Masonic Lodge 107 since 1957. He was also past president of the Arkansas State Singing Convention and the Arkansas State Quartet Convention; a former school teacher and a basketball coach in White and Lonoke Counties; and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given by the Boy Scouts for volunteer work.

Upon retiring from the employment security division, Mr. Fiddler became a consultant for industries needing assistance in obtaining personnel. He was named by Gov. Bill Clinton to head the Faulkner County Jimmy Carter campaign in 1976 and was also named to the Faulkner County Board of Election Commissioners.

Pallbearers at Friday's service will be Clarence A. Hamilton, Jack Roberts, Sen. Stanley Russ, Bill Johnson, Bill Brazil, and Ronnie Matthews.
