Artist. He was one of England's most renowned potters. His pioneering work in the industry led to a unique contribution to ceramic art. In 1784, he perfected the process of blue underglaze printing in earthenware, which not only led him to great posterity, but also was the essential catalyst for the great development of English tableware that was to follow. He then went on to make the single most important discovery in he history of the industry, the formula for fine bone china, making the name Spode famous throughout the world. His pottery is the oldest English pottery company still operating on the same site since 1770. After starting his own pottery, Spode returned to his former employers site in the center of Stoke, where it still remains. It is located across the road from this cemetery.
