Evelyn Groomer Sweatt was born to William and Martha Groomer on May 6, 1897 in Shaw, Kansas.
She went to elementary school in Shaw, Kansas. She attended high school in Iola, Kansas. She graduated at the University of Kansas as a school teacher. She taught elementary classes in Pittsburg, Kansas.
She married George A. Sweatt on May 4, 1921. They were married for 73 years. To this union was born William G. Sweatt.
George and Evelyn moved to Chicago, Illinois and after living in Chicago for 10 years, they moved to Evanston, Illinois.
Evelyn and her aunt were the first black women to be active in the Y.W.C.A,Evanston. Evelyn was active in the Boy Scouts. She loved working with the youth. She was a member of St. Andrews Church in Evanston.
In 1957, they moved to Los Angeles. Evelyn and George became members of St. Martin's, Compton. She was active in the Altar Guild.
In her later years, she taught at Locke Lett High School in Los Angeles, also in Orthopedic School for the handicapped.
Evelyn departed this life on Wednesday, February 22, 1995. She leaves to mourn her passing a son, William G. Sweatt, Sr; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
