U.S. Congressman. Born near Waynesville, Ohio, he attended Miami University and was successful in agricultural pursuits. He was a member in the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1862-63, 72-73). In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed United States Commissioner of Indian Affairs, serving (1875-77) and served as United States Consul General to Montreal, Canada, serving 1878, until he resigned in 1882. He died at age 77 in Oakland, Ohio.
