Crawley Brothers Charged With Killing W.M. Carden Is Verdict of Coroners Jury, Together With Unknown Party.
Reginald and Jim Crawley and an unknown party were charged by the coroners jury with the killing of W.M. Carden. Carden was shot down in the road between Orchard Hill and Milner last Friday afternoon while on his way to Milner, the shots coming, it is alleged, from a buggy in which three men were riding. The evidence produced at the coroners inquest was in substance that Carden was seen to come out into the main public road from another road which led from his home and to go on towards Milner walking. In a few moments Reg and Jim Crawley and an unknown party passed down the road in a buggy leading from Orchard Hill to Milner and shortly overtook Carden when a pistol shot was heard and Carden seen to fall to the ground. The buggy then went on a short distance when one of the party got out of the buggy and returned near where Carden had been seen to fall and another shot was fired. Then the buggy with the three men in it crossed over the Central R.R. and went out towards Liberty Hill. Two witnesses testified they recognized the Crawley brothers as they passed down the road just before Carden was shot. Carden, while marshal of the town of Milner about four years ago, killed one of the Crawley brothers and it is supposed that a grudge has existed since then. Coroner Whatley impaneled a jury Saturday and the above is in substance, the evidence produced there. Sheriff Harrison was telephoned for Friday afternoon and went there immediately and since Saturday after the verdict of the coroners jury has tried to apprehend the Crawleys. It is reported that the Crawleys will soon surrender and stand trial on the charges. The Crawleys live in Griffin where they are engaged in a business. The affair is regretted by everybody and has created considerable excitement. Mr. Carden was buried near the home place of Mr. Josh Martin Sunday morning. It is said that Gov. Brown telephoned Sheriff Harrison that he would offer a suitable reward for the arrest and conviction of each of the following parties: "Jim Crawley, age 34 or 35, red complected, about 5 feet, 8 inches high, weight about 150 pounds almost entirely bald-headed, hair dark. "Reg Crawley, age 25 or 26, light complected, weight about 150, about 5 feet, 10 or 11 inches high, round face, light hair, one hand badly cut, scar very noticeable. "Both wanted for murder."
