William David, the Bureau's landscape gardener since 1912, retired December 31st after 46 years of valuable service in landscaping and maintaining the Bureau grounds.

In a personal letter to Mr. David on the occasion of his retirement, Commerce Secretary Sinclair Weeks wrote, " You are to be commended for the skill and ingenuity displayed by you in transforming the Bureau's original wooded site into a neighborhood showplace through the harmonious planting of shrubs and flowers, and for the constant care you have always given to the maintenance and upkeep of the grounds."

Mr. David's efforts in establishing pleasant natural surroundings that are so essential to the climate and atmosphere for creative thinking were recognized officially in 1949 when he received the Department of Commerce Meritorious Silver Medal Award. His retirement luncheon is featured on p.4.
