Ignace Schott (also referred to as Ignace Schott de Dabo) was born in Dabo, Moselle, Lorraine, France. He was the third child of Jacques Schott and Marie Catherine Weber. As a young man he had a successful career as an ecclesiastic artist in nearby Saverne, France. He married Madeleine Oberle, fleeing political oppression he and Madeleine moved their young family to the United States and arrived in New York on January 5, 1870. Ignace, an artist who's mural paintings still grace the edifices of the religious community in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, chose to settle in Detroit, Michigan with it's large french speaking community. He was employed for many years by Friederichs & Staffin, later known as the Detroit Stained Glass Works. Here in America his mural work and stained glass creation can be found in churches throughout Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario, Canada. After his death Ignace's family moved to the New York City area where they used the surname Dabo rather than Schott. Ignace Schott is probably best known as the father of Leon Dabo, a prominent artist of the early 20th century.
