Page 26. "14th. At friend Hooper's. A letter arrived from M.A. Soper to say that she intends to be married to W. Lyle on Monday. I fear it is too hasty a step. We are invited, but, I suppose, shall not any of us go."
Page 27. "Monday, 16th. I suppose poor M.A. Soper will to-day be married to William Lyle. What are my fears? I am afraid, from what I learn of Patience, it will be a trying thing for poor George Lyle. I have many times thought that William has insinuating, deceiving, flattering ways with him. I am now nearly convinced of it, for surely M.A. would not have given up so soon, had not some guile been used."
"Tuesday, 17th. Surely Mary Ann is worse than I thought her to be. Had she not encouraged George Lyle more that she told Patience of, surely he would not feel so much from her marrying his brother. I fear this will indeed cause a chasm. .... "
Page 29. "26th ....."It seems some have formed themselves into a committee and tried the case of William Lyle and Mary Ann Soper, and found them not guilty ; ....."
